Preparing for a Puppy: Essential Considerations Before Bringing One Home

December in India often marks the season of puppies finding their forever homes. Many individuals, much like myself, might have already welcomed a delightful canine addition into their families. With New Year's resolutions and aspirations fresh in mind, it's common for people to consider adopting pets during this time. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that adopting an animal entails immense responsibility—lasting for years and touching various aspects of life.

It's not merely about dedicating time; it involves financial commitments, adjustments to your living space, family dynamics, and more.

As a veterinarian who has collaborated with numerous rescue shelters, I've witnessed many cases of abandonment, sometimes for reasons that might seem trivial. Reasons range from perceived challenges like excessive pooping, financial constraints for medical care, inadequate training, serious health issues, overbreeding, and so forth.

Sadly, the instances of animal abandonment outweigh those of humans, perhaps because human life is often regarded as more valuable. While agreeing or disagreeing is subjective, this remains an undeniable reality. So, what's the best way to guide individuals towards making better decisions? My answer: spreading awareness. Puppies are naturally curious and prone to mischief. During their initial months, they'll be teething, leading to a tendency to chew on almost anything. Ensuring a safe environment involves removing hazards, securing cords, and eliminating plants that might be harmful.

3. Gathering Supplies:

Acquire necessary supplies in advance—collar, leash, food and water bowls, quality food, crate, bedding, toys, grooming tools, and identification tags. Being prepared beforehand avoids last-minute rushes.

4. Vet Care:

Schedule an initial vet visit for health check-ups, vaccinations, and advice on preventive measures against fleas, ticks, and worms. Beyond vaccinations, be financially prepared for potential medical emergencies and consider obtaining pet insurance.
